Service Description

Join us for an unforgettable journey through the heart of the River Arts District, where history, artistry, and resilience come to life. This community has weathered immense challenges—including a historic flood in 1916 and the most recent flood of 2024, which is considered the thousand year flood. This vibrant community of artists has risen from the wreckage, more passionate than ever to share their stories and creations with you. On this pay-as-you-wish tour, you’ll explore the district’s rich history, meet incredible artists who lost everything yet refused to give up, and hear firsthand accounts of survival and rebirth. Along the way, enjoy a delicious tasting, witness a mesmerizing glass-blowing demonstration, and experience the indomitable spirit that makes this artistic hub so special. Come support, celebrate, and be inspired. The River Arts District is back—and ready to welcome you! What You’ll See This guided walking tour explores Asheville’s vibrant River Arts District (RAD), home to working artist studios, colorful street murals, repurposed industrial buildings, and one of the most creative communities in North Carolina. As you walk through the district, you’ll learn how this former warehouse area transformed into a nationally recognized arts hub. We’ll highlight local artists, public art installations, and the powerful story of resilience and revitalization that defines the River Arts District today. This is one of the most unique things to do in Asheville for art lovers and first-time visitors alike. What to Bring Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Many areas of the River Arts District are open and along the river, so layers and sunscreen are helpful depending on the season. Bring your camera — this is one of the most photogenic areas in Asheville. Is It Kid Friendly? Yes! The River Arts District Walking Tour is family-friendly and engaging for all ages. The tour focuses on art, history, and the evolution of the neighborhood rather than mature themes. How Much Walking? The tour covers approximately 1 mile over 120 minutes at a relaxed pace. The route includes sidewalks and paved paths with minimal incline. Where We Meet Exact meeting instructions are provided after booking. Tours take place entirely within Asheville’s River Arts District. Why We’re Different Unlike self-guided art walks, this experience provides context and storytelling behind the murals, studios, and local businesses.
